Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana: The Government of India has launched various “Pradhan Mantri Yojanas” to improve the quality of life of common people. The primary goal of these schemes is to ensure the development of the poor, farmers, women, youth, and rural population. Schemes like Ayushman Bharat, Kisan Samman Nidhi, Swachh Bharat Mission, Jan Dhan Yojana, Ujjwala Yojana, PM Awas Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana have brought major changes to the lives of people from various sectors in India. At present, these schemes are playing an important role in the overall development of the country. In this article, we will get detailed information about the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
What is Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana?
The dream of taking development to every village in India led to the creation of a historic project: Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). This is not just a road construction scheme; it is a tool for social and economic transformation.
PMGSY is a centrally sponsored scheme under which remote, inaccessible, and underdeveloped villages are connected to cities or major roads through all-weather paved roads. Its aim is to ensure year-round road connectivity for villagers so that they can access education, healthcare, markets, and development facilities easily.
The scheme was launched on 25 December 2000 under the leadership of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He believed, “If there are no roads, there can be no development.” At that time, many villages were cut off from towns — muddy roads in monsoons, dust in summer, and fog in winter. Reaching schools, selling crops in markets, or going to hospitals was extremely difficult. To solve this, Vajpayee ji introduced PMGSY as a well-planned and independently monitored central government project.
The primary goal of this scheme was to connect:
- Villages with a population of 500 or more in plain areas, and
- Villages with a population of 250 or more in hilly or difficult areas
with all-weather paved roads, thereby linking rural people directly to agriculture, education, healthcare, business, and employment opportunities.
In November 2015, the funding structure changed to a joint model between the central and state governments. For plain areas, the Centre provides 60% and the State 40%. For the North-Eastern and Himalayan states, the ratio is 90:10.
Various Phases of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (2000–2024)
PMGSY-I (2000–2014)
- Connected 1.35 lakh villages with new roads.
- Constructed around 3.68 lakh km of rural roads.
PMGSY-II (2013 onwards)
- Focused mainly on improving and widening existing rural roads.
PMGSY-III (2019–2025)
- Aims to construct and upgrade 1.25 lakh km of roads connecting rural markets, schools, and health centres.
PMGSY-IV (Announced in 2024)
- Planned construction of 62,500 km of new roads to connect 25,000 new habitations, thus expanding development even further.
